SIX TIPS ON HOW TO STRENGTHEN YOUR CONFIDENCE

Valeria López

Trying to find yourself in such a big world is so hard these days and even once you’ve somewhat realized the person you want the world to see, it’s difficult to actually develop the confidence to present yourself as such. We are living through difficult times where people are placed into boxes constructed based on social norms. Establishing a sense of identity and finding self-acceptance is key to living a fulfilling life. Hence why I’m offering the following tips to improve your self-confidence:

1. Get ready for yourself every once in a while! (Life’s too short not to)
Dress as if you’re going to a yacht party for the premiere of your highly awaited movie, that you’re about to give a jaw-dropping concert, or simply put on something that makes you feel comfortable and confident in your own skin. The point here is to feel your absolute best!

2. Surround yourself with positive, like-minded people
Having to up a front with false pretenses is exhausting and extremely confining. Being able to simply be yourself in a safe environment full of people you trust plays a major role in building self-esteem.

3. Follow accounts on social media that bring you joy
There’s nothing worse than comparing yourself to an influencer and feeling like you’ve come up short. Following accounts that provide genuine value and happiness to your life can inspire you into becoming the best version of yourself.

4. Watch your favorite up-beat cheesy movies (I’m looking at you Legally Blonde)
Whenever you feel like you’re in a rut or are simply looking for some motivation, corny movies are your best bet. They provide a sense of escapism where you can live vicariously through another person’s vantage point, even if it’s only for an hour. Films can help you gain perspective on issues you’re facing, especially work or school-related. Sometimes, just picturing yourself in Harvard as Elle Woods or in Yale as Rory Gilmore is truly all you need to drive you into action.

5. Listen to inspiring music (try Reputation instead of Folklore next time, friends)
The media you consume plays such an important role in your mindset. Every morning, try to listen to at least one song that you know will improve your confidence level. Whether you choose a deep, beautiful, sorrowful tune or fun, dynamic beats, as long as it motivates you, the benefits will be reflected in your demeanor.

6. Meditate for 5-10 minutes (a little goes such a long way!)
Numerous studies have shown the almost endless amount of benefits meditation can have on your mental health. It improves stress and anxiety levels and promotes an overall better quality of life. (Victoria State Government, 2022) A stable, focused mind will allow you to be at peace with yourself and open the door to self-discovery and possibly self-acceptance.

I hope these tips will help you enhance your confidence and as a result build a better foundation for your own identity. Hopefully one day we can live in a world where being true to ourselves is encouraged, not shunned.
